Prayer Focus: Becoming a Faithful People
Verse for the Day:
5When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9“Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” 10Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. 11Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. John 6:5-11 (niv)
These verses come right in the middle of the story about how Jesus feeds the five thousand (John 6:1-15). What is interesting to note is that He used the seemingly insignificant gifts of a child (what are a few loaves and a few fish when thousands are hungry?) to shape a miracle for all to see and from which all present benefited. As we move forward in our Side by Side adventure, it is essential that each one of us prays that God would make us as faithful as this child, willing to place all of our seemingly insignificant resources (time, talent, treasure) into His hands so that together, we might all be part of a miracle.
A Few Minutes in Prayer:
Five Minutes:
Thank God for His word and especially for how magnificent the work of His Son is. Then ask God to help you visualize the scene John paints about the feeding of the 5000, pointing out the lesson he desires you to learn today. Remember, listening to what God says to us is such an important (and often overlooked) aspect of prayer.
Three Minutes:
Through Side by Side, pray that God would begin to transform the way that you see and use the gifts of time, talent, and treasure He has given you. Ask Him to help you come to a new place in your faith by committing to offer what you have for His use. Ask Him to lead you in a specific way in this regard.
Three Minutes:
Close your time with God in two ways. First, if you have felt led in a specific way with regard to offering what you have to God, thank Him for that and commit to follow His lead if you are ready. If, however, you haven’t yet discerned what God desires in this area or if you’re feeling resistant to His lead, let Him know that and invite Him – honestly – to keep speaking to you. Finally, end by praying specifically for others in your church, that God might use this time in our church’s history as a way to grow in the grace of offer to God all that we are and have.
