Side by Side Prayer Guide: Day Three
By CRCC | February 21, 2006
Day 3 – Tuesday, February 21
Prayer Focus: Becoming a Connected People
Verses for the Day:
14“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (niv)
One of the great themes of God’s dream is that His people would reflect His Son to such an extent the world around them might be illuminated with love and good deeds. But it’s not simply that God wants good deeds done! Notice that there is a specific end He has in mind: that those who see such light might come to a place where they could praise God because of the kindness shown to them by Jesus’ followers. Through Side by Side we’re asking that God transform us into a people who “shine” more in our community and that through this, we might help people connect with the God who loves them.
A Few Minutes in Prayer:
Five Minutes:
Ask God to bring images of your city and its people to your mind. Let them come slowly or rapidly, however He decides. As these images come into view, ask Him: “Lord, how would you lead me to live out Jesus words?” Then listen for His response at each image.
Five Minutes:
Continue in your time today by reviewing the scenes he brought to your mind in the previous few minutes. At each one ask this new question: “How, Lord, would you lead our church to stand side by side with the people I see here?”
Then, pray that God would transform CRCC so that it would be a church that really shines – not to bring ourselves any glory, but rather, so that people might come to know God’s love through the good deeds Jesus commands us to offer to our world.
Two Minutes:
Conclude your time of prayer by asking God to use this day to reveal more places where His light could shine. Then, keep your eyes open as you go about your normal business.
Special Focus Today:
As you know, Side by Side means that we will be standing beside our community, ministering to the needs present here for the long term. In beginning to discern our next significant steps in reaching out to our local community, it is essential that we hear how God has spoken to you today. Please take a few moments and email me how God spoke to you when you listened for His answer to the question “How would you lead our church to stand side by side with the people of this community?” In the coming months, I’ll lead the leadership of the church in praying about the same question, taking what you’ve heard into account, so that we all might be faithful stewards of God’s dream for our local area.
