Day 4 – Wednesday, February 22
Prayer Focus: Becoming a Compassionate People
Verse for the Day:
2Be merciful to me, LORD, for I am faint; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are in agony. 3My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long? Psalm 6:2-3 (niv)
There are great needs in our community, as I trust that God revealed to you yesterday. Yet, we have not simply been called to reach out to those only in our community. Through Side by Side our church has been called to touch a specific community in Africa, a community where the words from Psalm 6 ring out daily: “How long?”
They ask “how long?” because where there is hunger here, there is famine there. Where there is disease here, there is a pandemic there. God is calling us to be transformed so that we weep over so many children who cry out for help and hear only silence from their world.
Today in our prayer time, we’ll be letting God begin to soften our hearts as we ask “Questions of Examen” before Him. (Examen is the Latin word for the pointer on a set of scales or balances. In the Christian context, it describes the practice of making an honest assessment of our life and attitudes before God so that He might continue His work of transformation unimpeded.)
A Few Minutes in Prayer:
Today in prayer spend time asking “questions of examen” making sure to pause long enough for God to speak to you at each point.
“Lord, I open my heart before you today and ask you to show me the places where my heart is hard toward the sick and truly helpless… [wait] …teach me compassion for these, Lord.”
“Lord, I open my heart before you today and ask you to show me the places where my heart is hard toward the children of Africa… [wait] …teach me compassion for these, Lord.”
“Lord, I open my heart before you today and ask you to show me the places where my heart is hard toward your call to me… [wait] …lead me into the joy of following you, Lord.”
“Lord, I open my heart before you today and ask you to show me the places where my heart brings you joy… [wait] …thank you for your smile upon me, Lord.”
