Side by Side Prayer Guide: Day Six

By CRCC | February 24, 2006

Day 6 – Friday, February 24
Join us in Fasting Today

NOTE: We’re just one day from kicking off Side by Side now – I’m very excited, of course. We’re celebrating the beginning of this journey together in three ways tomorrow and I would like to extend my invitation to join us at each of these three events:

See you (hopefully) at all of these points, tomorrow…now to today’s prayer focus…

Prayer Focus: Becoming a Sacrificial People

Verse for the Day:

When you seek me with all your heart, I will be found by you. Jeremiah 29:13-14 (niv)

Two of the most important outcomes in Side by Side are 1) that you would seek God’s lead for your life as His follower (in fact, we’ve been doing that all week) and 2) that our church family would seek His lead, as well. Not only that, but that we would seek to follow Him even if it calls us to sacrifice to make this happen. Today we move on to a deeper level of seeking that lead through a symbol of the sacrifice we are ready to make. This symbol is our fast together as a church family.

When we fast we put aside some of our normal concerns (eating, for example) so that we can seek God’s lead in our life together, ask for his hand to move in our midst, and dedicate ourselves to Him, all out of a thankful heart for what God has done in our life. This is what we do today (and tomorrow), together! And as we do it, remember that while you can pray without fasting, fasting is not really complete without prayer.

Begin your fast after lunch today and we’ll break that fast together tomorrow night at church, 5:30pm, with a meal provided for you. Note: Please consider carefully whether and how you should fast if you have any health concerns. Please know, also, that there are many ways to fast. For questions or more information, call the church office (503.667.CRCC).

A Few Minutes in Prayer

After Lunch:

Thank God for how he meets your needs day-to-day, being as specific as you can. Thank Him for the meal you just ate and then ask that He might teach us all what He desires as we choose to fast in some way for the next 30 or so hours.

Dinner Time:

In the midst of your first “meal-less” meal time, pray that God would give you a hunger to follow Him and a desire for the people in your life to know Him. Pray specifically for each person who comes to you mind, seeking God’s insight for ways in which you might encourage them in their journey to discover Christ or know Him more deeply.

Bed Time:

Thank God for your hunger. Thank Him for using it to remind you that you need His presence in your life more than even food, although it is easier to forget this fact than to remember it. Ask that He would give you a happy heart tomorrow when you feel hunger by reminding you of His promise to be found by you when sought.

If there are any remaining questions or concerns about Side by Side that are still in your mind, bring them to God tonight and ask that He might answer those concerns with clarity. Continue to pray in this regard throughout the duration of your fast.
